586 B.C.E: King Nebuchadnezzar of Babylon conquers Judea and exiles the Jews.

3rd century B.C.E.: According to the Greco-Egyptian historian Manetho, Jews are expelled from Egypt as lepers.

19: Emperor Tiberius expels the Jews from Rome and Italy.

70: The Romans expell the Jews from Jerusalem and they are "forbidden to enter on pain of death." Supposedly, 1.1 million Jews are executed, and 97,000 enslaved. The city is renamed Aelia Capitolina. The Jews are allowed to return eventually.

324: The Roman emperor Constantine re-enforces the edict banning the Jews from Jerusalem.

612-621: The Spanish king Sisebut tells all Jews to either convert to Christianity or be exiled.

628: Frankish King Dagobert I expels the Jews from his kingdom.

637: Caliph Omar ibn al Khatab takes Palestine from the Romans, invites the Jews back but forbids them from entering Jerusalem.

694: Expulsion of Jews from Visigoth Spain.

1012: Emperor Henry XI of Germany expels the Jews from the town of Mainz.

1182: Eighteen year old Philip Augustus, in need of money, confiscates all Jewish lands and buildings and drives them out of France. Ostensibly, they had been committing ritual murders. The Jews are readmitted in 1198.

1187: Saladin takes Jerusalem form the Crusaders and invites the Jews to return to Palestine, but forbids them from entering Jerusalem.

1290: Edward I expells the Jews from England. Some Jews remain in England by hiding their identity and religion, but between 4,000 and 16,000 leave the country for France and Germany. Following a petition by Rabbi Menasseh ben Israel of Amsterdam, Oliver Cromwell readmits the Jews in 1649

1306: Phillip the Fair of France, needing funds after his war with the Flemish, expells the Jews by secret order, and confiscates their property. Most Jews leave for the next Duchy. They are allowed to gradually drift back.

1321-22: Another expulsion of Jews from France.

1349: Expulsion of the Jews from Saxony.

1360: The Jews are expelled from Hungary. They return later.

1370: Jews are expelled from the Duchy of Flanders.

1394: Final expulsion of Jews from France.

1420: Albrecht V expells the Jews from Austria.

1424: Expulsion of Jews from Cologne.

1439: Expulsion of Jews from Augsburg.

1492: As a nationalistic follow-up to their recent victory in the crusade against the Muslim Moors, King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella of Spain expell all the Jews from their lands. The official reason given is that Jews encourage the Marranos to persist in their Jewishness instead of becoming good Christians.

1492-93: Expulsion of 100,000 Jews from Sicily.

1495: The Grand Duke Alexander expells the Jews from Lithuania. They eventually return.

1496-97: Expulsion of Jews from Portugal.

1551: Expulsion of Jews from Bavaria.

1567: Another expulsion of the Jews from the republic of Genoa.

1569: Expulsion of Jews from the Papal States

1582: Another expulsion of the Jews from Hungary.

1593: Another expulsion of Jews from the Papal States.

1600's: Denmark allows Jews to enter for the first time.

1614: The Jews are expelled from Frankfurt, Germany, after riots that Vincent Fettmilch led on the "Jews Street." Approximately 1,380 leave via ships.

1615: The Jews are expelled from Worms, Germany

1654: The Porteugese reconquer northern Brazil from the Dutch. The Dutch had granted religious freedom to Jews in Brazil in 1634, and Jews had flocked to northern Brazil from Europe. The Porteugese now expell the Jews and ship hundreds of Conversos to Lisbon for trail and excecution. Many Jews flee to the West Indies and the Netherlands.

1670: Expulsion of Jews from Vienna.

1682: Expulsion of the Jews from Marseilles, France.

1745: Expulsion of Jews from Prague, Czechoslovakia. 70,000 Jews leave that city by the "King's order, the reason being kept a secret."

1744: Maria Theresa, Queen of Hungary and Bohemia, banishes the Jews, declaring: "Henceforth, no Jew, no matter under what name, will be allowed to remain here without my written permission. I know of no other troublesome pest within the state than this race, which impoverishes the people by their fraud, usury and money-lending and commits all deeds which an honorable man despises. Subsequently, they have to be removed and excluded from here as much as possible."

1782: Sweden allows Jews to enter for the first time.

1791: Jews forbidden to settle anywhere in Russia, except for the provinces making up the Pale of Settlement. This restriction continues for about a century.

1814: Norway allows Jews to enter for the first time.

1862: The Military Governor of newly conquered Civil War territory, General Ulysses S. Grant issues General Order 11. It mandates the total expulsion of "the Jews, as a class" from an area corresponding with what is today Northern Mississippi, Kentucky and Western Tennessee, within "twenty four hours". The Jews are denied rail transportation and forced to travel to Memphis by foot. A Mr. Silverman from Chicago, visiting the town, tries to get a desperate telegram through to General Grant, and is thrown in prison. Cesar Kaskel travels to Washington D.C. and appeals to President Lincoln, who has the order revoked.

1885: Expulsion of about 10,000 Russian Jews, refugees of 1881-1884 pogroms, from Germany.

1891: Expulsion of Jews from Moscow, Russia.

1933: Germany and its allies begin the process which became the Holocaust. They strongly encourage Jews to leave, starting by stripping east European Jewish immigrants of their citizenship.

Jews are still not allowed to emigrate to Syria.
