• The War of the Austrian Succession expands into a conflict between Great Britain and France. In North America, it is known as King George's War.  The war has started in North America as the War of Jenkins' Ear between Britain and Spain but had died down in 1743.
• (February 21) The French break the British blockade of Toulon.
• (March 15) France declares war in the United Kingdom.
• (August 8-September) French soldiers and Mikmaq Indians under Prévost try to capture Port Royal in Nova Scotia (now Annapolis Royal) with little success.
• (August 15) Frederick II of Prussia, fearing the rising power of Austria, invades Bohemia.
• (November 4) Charles IV, King of the Two Sicilies, defeats the Austrians at Velletri.

• John Wesley calls Methodist preachers together in London for their first conference. Lady Huntington and the Calvinist faction leave in a huff.  The floor of a Methodist chapel in Leeds collapses as his brother Charles Wesley is preaching. Charles writes a hymn about it.
