A horrible, but useful cliche used to describe a situation where the effect is completely ruined by over-doing something good.

This is derived from pastry and breadmaking, where a thin layer of egg yolk brushed onto the pastry gives a shiny glaze, but too much makes it collapse into a soggy heap.
