Robert L. Forward's first and best-known hard science fiction novel.
Based in part on ideas from Larry Niven and others, Forward's knowledge of physics (especially gravitational physics) made this a solid, plausible and fascinating book. It very accurately describes a species living on the surface of a neutron star and its eventual contact with humanity.
