The Obligation is part of the
Ritual of the Calling of an
Engineer, written by
Rudyard Kipling in 1923, in response to a request from a group of
Canadian engineers. The Obligation is not an
oath, but a
solemn expression of intention to
adhere to the
highest ideals of the engineering profession. The ring, which the engineer must wear on the little finger of the
right hand (unless
left handed), is a
reminder to yourself and a
sign to others that you have taken this
Obligation.
