Anglia Railways is a UK Train Operating Company serving East Anglia -
Norfolk and Suffolk, along with parts of Cambridgeshire and Essex. The
company's main route is from London Liverpool Street to Norwich, with a
variety of local routes throughout the region as well. Important secondary
destinations are Ipswich, Colchester and (from 2002) Cambridge. Trains were to
have served a projected station at Cherry Hinton, near Cambridge, but this was
never built. Anglia Railways is owned by GB Railways, who also operate
HullTrains.
Anglia operates a diverse assortment of trains, including Class 86 intercity
locomotives and the corresponding coaches, similar to those used by Virgin Trains,
and Turbostar Class 170 sets in 2- and 3-coach formations. These vehicles serve
the major routes, while railbuses operate over the secondary parts of the network.
The company prides itself on its good facilities for cyclists, with even the
smallest trains offering cycle racks. Anglia has received several awards, including
European Train Operator of the Year 2000. I am reliably informed by heyoka, however, that the service is just as poor as any other, if not more so. If yu want real reliability, use the Island Line.
