You know that little voice in your head? Your inner voice? Deaf people
have one too.
As deaf people learn to read and write, they pick up phonological
representations of the letters and words even without auditory input. This
makes sense because the regions of the brain that are active while they
sign are the language areas - not the small motor areas.
Bonus Fact: Deaf schizophrenics have auditory hallucinations, and blind
schizophrenics have visual ones.
