Being on the dole or a doly/doliee is a scouse slang term for one receiving benefits from the authorities. Another term used in Eire and parts of Scotland is 'on the brew'.

Dole is slang for benefits. Doldrums the place of depression, melancholy and despair.

Being on the dole makes you feel gutted. The only thing to do once every two weeks is sign on a dotted line that declares you are in poverty.

A song sung by Manchester United fans agaisnt rival Scouser teams Liverpool and Everton to the tune of You'll Never Walk Alone' goes: 'so sign on...with a pen in your hand...cus you'll never get a job YOU'LL NEVER GET A JOB!' and this is from a bunch of Mancs!!

If you are under the age of 25 years here in the Great land of Britain you get considerably less quid a week than those older than youse. The government reckon thats enough.

Then after cashing your giro at the Post Office you can go home, take a chill pill and then watch This Morning, Jerry Springer, eat cheapo beans from netto and wait til the giro comes through the door.
