Central Norfolk
Wayland is an area of Central Norfolk, centered round the town of Watton. An area of farmland interspersed with ancient woodland, the villages in the area all have signs ancient origin, and certainly the area is dotted with evidence of Bronze Age, Iron Age and Roman settlements. The name harks bark to the 11th Century, being given to the local 'hundred' and possibly meaning "Dark Wood" - a reference to the dense forest of the time. The forest is now largely cleared, but the inherent peace and beauty of the area is yet unspoiled.
Tradition has it that the original Babes in the Wood (of pantomime fame) were abandoned in Wayland Wood, the 'wicked uncle' of the tale living at Griston Hall.
Having lived in Watton, and nearby Norwich, I would frequently escape to the country, and walking the lowland hills and woodland was one of the best energisers I know.
Gritchka says It is also of course the English name of the smith, Völund
