Jared Leto was born on December 26, 1971 in Bossier City, Louisiana. He
lived there with his mother, an unmarried drifter who took he and his brother,
Shannon, from there to South America, Haiti, Wyoming, and a
commune in Colorado, before settling in Virginia.
He dropped out of high school in
10th grade and had a series of working class jobs. He became interested in
painting and eventually enrolled in the Philadelphia University of the Arts.
There, he discovered acting and transferred to the School of Visual Arts in
New York City.
He wrote and starred in the film Crying Joy while still in New York. In
1992 he moved to Los Angeles to pursue an acting career. He got various
roles in television series’ such as The Torkelsons, Almost Home, and Camp
Wilder.
In 1994 he landed two roles, one playing opposite Alicia Silverstone on the
Showtime movie "The Cool and the Crazy" and, more notably, as
Jordan Catalano in the ABC series "My So Called Life".
He was noted by People Magazine as one of the"50
Most Beautiful People" in both 1996 and 1997.
His first major film was "How To Make an American Quilt" in
1995.
He currently resides in Los Angeles.
