1997
Novel by
Alice Hoffman. Unrelated to the
execrable motion picture of the same name. Loosely based on the
seminal 19th century novel,
Wuthering Heights,
Here on Earth tells the story of
March Murray who returns to the small
Massachusetts town she was raised in to attend the funeral of Judith Dale, the
housekeeper who largely raised her. March is forced to
confront the world of her past, including
Hollis, a boy she once loved, now a
twisted and
embittered man she cannot keep away from.
Elegant and lyrical, Hoffman expertly combines a portrayal of small-town life, the theme of a consuming love, believable characterizations and a touch of the magical.
