Joshua Daniel Hartnett was born in St. Paul, Minnesota on July 21, 1978. He is the son of artist Molly Hartnett and commercial builder manager Daniel Hartnett (also has two younger brothers and a younger sister). His education includes graduating from South High School in Minneapolis, Minnesota in June of 1996, then attending SUNY in Purchase, New York. Josh was kicked out and moved to Los Angeles where he landed a role in the TV series Cracker. He has brown hair, brown eyes and is 6'3" tall.
In 1998 he got his screen break with the role of Jamie Lee Curtis' son in Halloween H20: 20 Years Later. That same year Harnett's profile further increased when he starred in The Faculty. He gradually received more prominent roles such as his Iago character in O and his roles in Black Hawk Down, Pearl Harbor, 40 Days and 40 Nights and The Virgin Suicides.

Josh is a vegetarian.
Was scheduled to speak at a political rally in support of Senator Paul Wellstone the weekend the Senator was killed along with 7 others in a plane crash. On October 26th 2002 (the day after the Senator's death), Hartnett appeared at a peace rally in St. Paul, Minnesota and spoke a few words in rememberance.
