West Anglia Great Northern is a train operating company serving the east of
England and north London. Its main routes run from London's King's Cross,
Moorgate and Liverpool Street termini to Peterborough, Cambridge
and King's Lynn, with suburban routes to Enfield and Chingford in north
London, and two branches serving Hertford. The company is usually known as wagn,
and people commonly refer to its services as 'the wag'n train'. The
use of 'Great Northern' in the title refers to the pre-grouping Great Northern
Railway, just as the long-distance Great North Eastern Railway uses the name of a
pre-nationalisation company. The route from King's Cross and Moorgate to
Peterborough and King's Lynn is known as the Great Northern route, and the one from
Liverpool Street to Cambridge, Stansted Airport, Hertford East and Enfield
Town at the West Anglia route. The expression 'West Anglia' is a little misleading,
as the route in fact serves the west of East Anglia.
Wagn's services are as much, or as little, reliable and popular as most
other suburban trains in the south-east. The company is part of the National
Express group, which operates several other TOCs such as c2c, Eurostar,
Central Trains, Midland Mainline and Wessex Trains. In 2004, the West Anglia
route is due to be combined with those of Anglia Railways and First Great
Eastern to form the new Greater Anglia franchise. National Express is naturally
bidding for the new deal. Note: the Moorgate branch, shown below, does not operate
at weekends.
