Socially
responsible investing is kind of like
putting your money where your mouth is. This is a method of investing that involves buying
stocks or other securities of
companies that try to act as
upstanding citizens in
society, usually in a
mutual fund. Usually the
fund manager picks the stocks they want for the mutual fund, then put the stocks through a
screen. The more common screens involve
environmental and
social concerns, but they can also include
faith based principles, such as
Islamic funds. There is also the
idea that a socially responsible fund can
vote their shares of the stock to make a company
change it's
policies to be more
enlightened. Alot of investors think S.R.I. is a fad and that the returns lag most other investments, but it still might be a
salve for one's
conscience.
