Peter Straub is the founder of Straub Beer of St. Marys, PA. He was born on June 28, 1850 in Felldorf, Wuertenberg, Germany. The Straub family had been brewing beer there for a long time and when Peter was old enough he got a job as a cooper, making and repairing wooden barrels. He wanted to be a brewer, but there was little chance of doing that since one generally stayed in the trade of their choice. So he came to the United States in 1869.
He had relatives in the Pittsburgh area and got a job at the Eberhardt and Ober Brewing Company where a John Straub was a manager. It wasn't long before Peter tired of the city life and moved to Brookville, PA about 80 miles northeast of Pittsburgh. While working for the Christ and Algeir Brewery there, he perfected his brewing process. After that he moves to Benzinger (St. Marys) a few miles north of Brookville where he married and had ten children. He bought the Benzinger Spring Brewery from his father-in-law and in 1872 started Straub Beer which is still in business today.
