This is what
people usually say to me when I tell them I am a
mathematician. They don't seem embarrassed by this. They're
proud.
It seems to be more socially acceptable to be innumerate
than to be illiterate. The people who boast I was never any good at maths at school don't usually go on to say Oh! And I can't read either!
