The
NetHack item which makes wearing
random amulets
hazardous. The
amulet of strangulation is always found
cursed (it might even
auto-curse) and
strangles you in 6
turns if you put it on.
Prayer is your only
hope with this one.
If you polymorph into a metallivore and devour the amulet, you will instantly choke, with a 1/20th chance of survival. You are what you eat, even in NetHack (perhaps especially in NetHack). Don't eat random amulets.
Although this explanation largely refers to NetHack, there is an AD&D version as well (after all, NH was largely derived from AD&D).
I will nobly pass up the opportunity for a lame joke regarding possible uses of this amulet during an encounter with a succubus or incubus.
