Suricata suricatta
(The name is French, probably derived from Dutch surikat, "macaque", possibly from an African word)
A small, burrowing, carnivorous mammal, native to southern Africa. Similar to the mongoose (a relative), the suricate has greyish-brown fur and a long tail. Also called a meerkat.
