A large semi-desert area covering much of the western interior of South Africa including parts of the provinces of the Western Cape, the Northern Cape, the Eastern Cape and the Free State. It has a unique and varied flora despite its aridity, stunning scenery and a fascinating geological history: the Karoo was once a huge inland sea, later a massive swamp. A few Karoo farms are the world's richest sources of mammal-like reptile fossils.
