Tales from the Crypt was one of the - if not the most - infamous horror comics of the early fifties. Started in 1950 by EC Comics, it was quickly known for being gory and having clever storylines. It was dropped by the publisher, William M. Gaines in 1954, after the Comics Code Authority had made it impossible to sell horror and crime comics.

HBO made a television series out of the comic in 1989, featuring many of the original storylines, as well as some new ones (ironically, most of the storylines were from other of the EC Comics, such as The Vault of Horror). After six seasons, the show stopped in 1995.
