Sometime smallest city in England, located in North Yorkshire.
Ripon grew out of a local market in the dark ages to become an important staging post between London and Edinburgh. It was granted city status in the 16th century and its cathedral is well-maintained and dominates a city that would only qualify as a large market town in today's league.
Ripon is home to one of the most picturesque racecourses in the country, and also one of the least picturesque nightclubs. The Matrix (Formerly Sly's) is the place to be if you want to have your head stomped on in the midst of a beer boys vs squaddies free-for-all.
Ripon is also the nearest major town to the North's largest theme park Lightwater Valley, sometime home of the world's largest rollercoaster.
Ripon has a large student population, most of whom attend the University of York (Ripon) campus. Ripon is home to a branch of Woolworth's.
