Nico Nico Douga is a Japanese video sharing website owned by Niwango, and it is the ninth most popular (most visited) website in 2009. Although the most visited video sharing website in Japan is YouTube, the highest average of monthly spending on video sharing website is Nico Nico Douga.
Users can upload, view and put comments like other video sharing sites. However, typed comments are displayed directly onto the video clips, and it creates the atmosphere of shared watching with other users.
Uploaded contents are likely to have more nerdsor otaku tastes such as animation, pop music and computer games, but some of those contents are quite elaborate and unique unlike in other website contents.
In November 2008, the number of users reached over 10,000,000, and in April 2009 the average staying time is higher than YouTube. The website won the Japanese Good Design Award and Japanese Otaku Award in 2007, and an Honorary Mention of the Digital Communities category at Prix Ars Electronica 2008.
