Status: Under Development

Launch Date: Not Set as of July 2, 2000

Mission Summary: GALEX is a UV telescope which will map the global history and probe the causes of star formation over 80% of the life of the Universe. This is the period in which galaxies have evolved most dramatically, and it is the time in which most stars, elements, and galaxy disks had their origins. Mission goals include imaging of the entire sky, including about 10 million galaxies, deep imaging of about 200 square degrees of sky, including approximately 1 million galaxies, and wide-field, medium, and deep spectroscopic analysis of 200, 20, and 2 square degrees, respectively.
