An interracial, civil rights organization that was founded by James Farmer in 1942. It was based on non-violent direct action, focusing on sit-ins to protest the segregation in Chicago.

No one was too worried about CORE until they started organizing the Freedom Rides through the South. The idea was to send interracial busloads of people to towns in the South to see what would happen when they tried to get off the bus and to provoke legislative action. Eventually the Freedom Rides were successful in making segregation on interstate bus lines illegal.

Since then CORE has become increasingly conservative in their actions and endorsements. The main goal today seems to be more along the lines of advocating economic gains for African Americans and support of African American political candidates.
