If you hold the ends of a rope and let it sag down between,
it forms a catenary curve. Imagine holding that curve
stiff and flipping it over, so it points up.
You now have a catenary arch. The sides of the catenary
arch are self supporting, reducing the forces on the keystone. The gateway arch in St. Louis is a catenary arch.
