British artist, born in
London in
1964, graduated from
Cambridge
University in
1986. Often mentioned in conjunction with
Damien
Hirst as a founder of the British
contemporary art movement.
Quinn achieved widespread recognition with his sculpture entitled
'Self' in 1991. 'Self' was a sculpture of Quinn's own head that
he carved out of 4.5 litres of frozen blood mixed with antibiotics and anticoagulants. This blood was extracted over a
five month period from Quinn's own body. 4.5 litres is approximately the
volume of blood in a male of Quinn's age and build.
Shows to date (circa 2001):

On a personal note, I believe that chiseling a sculpture of
your own head out of your own blood is one of the most
hardcore
acts I have ever heard of a
sculptor performing.
If you are looking
for a way to tell the world that you are a very very serious person,
the bar has been raised...
