A well-known
virtual community, founded by
Howard Rheingold in 1996 as an offshoot of
The WELL. The original Electric Minds placed emphasis on
conferencing, and used the
WellEngaged conferencing software system along with other custom software.
In 1997, Rheingold sold Electric Minds to Durand Communications Inc., which transferred the community to their CommunityWare online service. After Durand was acquired by Online Systems Services, Inc., later Webb Interactive Services, Inc., Electric Minds was moved to Webb's portal platform.
