DOD Networking Model (thing)

An old networking model that is virtually unused in modern computing, due to the acceptance of the much more thorough OSI reference model. However, it is historically interesing because it was this model that the Department of defense devloped in the 1970s for the network which would become the Internet.

Whereas the OSI reference model contains 7 layers, the DOD Networking Model contains only 4:

• Process/Application: The highest layer, this layer carries out such tasks as ftp, email, or http
  
• Host-to-Host: This layer contains host communication protocols such as TCP and UDP
  
• Internet Layer: Contains the routing protocol, in the Internet's case, IP.
  
• Network Access: The lowest layer, this is the layer of the protocol the network card functions on, such as Ethernet.
