Once the genus containing all trout and salmon, many former species
of Salmo have been moved into genera Oncorhyncus and Salvelinus.
With one notable exception, members of genus Salmo spawn in lakes and streams feeding the North
Atlantic Ocean, the Mediterranean Sea, and branches thereof, although
some are restricted to certain landlocked European and Asian lakes.
