The first half of the two-part play,
Angels in America.
Millennium Approaches is set in the fall of 1985. Although as much
comedic as
tragic in tone, the play ambitiously takes on themes of
Religion, morality and
politics as seen through the eyes of its characters.
Much of the play deals with the breakup and breakdown of the
relationship of Prior and Louis when Prior discovers he has
AIDS. Prior becomes an unwilling
prophet when he is selected by an
Angel to receive Revelation. Louis, on the other hand, is left
looking for answers and becomes involved with Joe, a closeted
Mormon law clerk who is a protege of
Roy Cohn.
Abandoned by her
husband Joe, Harper sinks deeper into
delusion and seeks a release from her pain. In their
quest for answers, each of the
characters struggle with larger questions of
Justice,
Love and the Nature of
God.
