When a friendly pilot is downed and rescue craft (such as helicopters) are in the vicinity, military pilots can fly RESCAP in the area to ensure that no harm comes to the pilot or the SAR vehicles. This involves enganging both hostile air and, if necessary, ground units.
Flying RESCAP is a priority UNLESS the pilot ejects into extremely hostile territory (speak SAM, flak and anti-aircraft batteries) since the patrolling pilots are very likely to get shot down also. In that case the other aircraft will proceed with their mission but of course still relay the position of the downed pilot for later pickup.
