The adze is a
carpenter's tool something like an
axe but with the
edge at
right angles to the
handle. The
Maoris were the only people who used it regularly as a
weapon. Their war adzes had
Jade blades and
elaborately
carved handles, while those used as tools had plain ones.
It is also the origin of the term half assed.
