Term applied to a military province in the Byzantine Empire.
During the 7th century, imperial provincial administration was altered substantially, under pressure from the Slavic and Arabic invasions. The civilian provincial administrations were replaced by large military provinces, which were named for the regiment stationed in the province.
The regimental commander (strategos) also became the acting governor.
