(Spanish, from platero, "silversmith", derived from plata, "silver")

Richly ornamented style of decoration in Spanish architecture of the period c. 1480 to c. 1560. The plateresco style combines elements of Italian Renaissance architecture with Moorish and late Gothic features.

The first phase of plateresco, also called Isabelline style (after Queen Isabella I), is dominated by the Gothic elements. A prime example of Isabelline style is the façade of the Colegio de San Gregorio in Valencia (constructed from 1488).

The second phase of plateresco (from c. 1525) is more clearly influenced by Renaissance elements - examples being the cathedral of Granada and several buildings in Salamanca (e.g. the west façade of the University of Salamanca).
