Portmanteau of man + purse, indicating a man's handbag. The term has become popular in US tech circles to refer to either 'tourist fanny pack' type bags but more often a sling bag smaller than a backpack used to carry devices and gear, especially as iPad and Android tablets and eReaders have become ubiquitous. EDC sling bags fit the bill also.
