The drama "Men of Honor", directed by George Tillman Jr. and written by Scott Marshall Smith chronicles he story of Carl Brashear, the first African-American, then also the first amputee, US Navy Diver.
A cast overview finds Cuba Gooding Jr. as Carl Brashear and Robert De Niro in the role of Leslie W. "Billy" Sunday, Carl's trainer. "Billy" is married to Gwen Sunday, played by Charlize Theron. The casting is odd, but the dynamic relationship between Gooding, De Niro and Theron turns out surprisingly well. Unfortunately, the quality of the script is at times rather low, and Tillman seems very determined to wring every drop of populism of the movie. The score and music in the movie seem to confirm this, being a mixture of classic Sousa and some old-style rock. All in all, not bad, but at the same time something that could have been a lot better.
