In traditional French folklore, a "loup garou" is a werewolf.

The loup garou is often more terrifying than the typical werewolf of legend because it is as intelligent and as cruel as a human being and also possesses magical powers that make it very difficult to destroy.

Most French werewolves are savage monsters that kill for the joy of killing, but there have been some loup garou stories that depict more noble creatures.
