A politician who is conservative only in
financial matters, but neutral or liberal when it comes to social and moral issues. Examples include former
Massachusetts governor
William Weld and
New Jersey governor
Christie Todd Whitman. Weld, for example, was in favor of ideas such as
deregulation, and
tax cuts, but was also
pro-choice and in favor of
gay rights.
Contrast with a social conservative, such as Jesse Helms, who has a strong moral agenda which includes things like outlawing abortion.
