VA Linux sold hardware that Linux runs on. They were the leader in Linux workstations and servers. They have since gotten out of the hardware business and are now more service oriented. They also own linux.com and Andover, including Slashdot and Sourceforge, which are part of the OSDN (Open Source Development Network).

Update: On December 5, 2001 VA Linux changed it's name to VA Software. In the months leading up to this change, they moved to a hybrid open source/closed-source business model.
