The Alarm Sounds...
Legs soaked, cold with hip-high dew.

Faces red. We fled, running until we
vaulted the rusted barbed-wire
and dashed across a stretch of asphalt
and collapsed,
breathing hard on the other side.

To the safety of our home.
Where we were given water,
bread and jam.
And were cruelly betrayed by parents,
who, upon seeing the crime from across the valley,
phoned the police.
