In 1948 she entered the University of California at Berkeley, ultimately graduating from University of Chicago in 1951. In 1948. she married a sociology instructor, Philip Rief; they divorced in the late 1950s. From 1955-1957, she attended Harvard in pursuit of her Ph.D.
High-priestess of the avant-garde.
She won a MacArthur Foundation Grant in 1990.
