The stage crew on a
play are the people whose job, under the
Stage Manager, is to move around pieces of
set, and generally do anything that needs doing on the
stage.
The stage crew are often the general
dogsbodies of the
tech crew, doing any odd jobs that need doing. This can often include (but is not limited to)
sweeping the
stage before a
show, making the
tea/
coffee,
crawling around under the
stage during a
performance, and
hanging off some
pipes on the
roof of the
orchestra pit, with the
orchestra in there, during a
show, to get to the
video camera because some
musician has knocked the
plug out of the
socket and can't work out when it isn't working. (And yes, I have had to do all of these myself - the last one was especially
fun)
