Having already enjoyed some success with other limited availability beverages for the Winter holiday season, such as an eggnog latte and a peppermint flavored mocha, the coffee chain began to explore options for creating flavor profiles to match the whimsy of other seasons.

In 2003 they developed and debuted the first PSL at 100 test locations in Vancouver, British Columbia and Washington, D.C. The espresso and steamed milk beverage with a pumpkin pie flavor profile of nutmeg, cinnamon, cloves, ginger was a success and has become one of the most anticipated seasonal beverage offering every year since. ¹

In 2015, the formula for the PSL was changed to include real pumpkin puree' in the syrup base and the caramel coloring was removed.

The success of the drink has spawned a pumpkin spice flavoring craze which seems to expand every year to other edibles such as cookies, yogurts, ice creams and snack cakes. Forbes magazine estimated the total net worth of pumpkin spiced products in 2015 at half a billion dollars, $100M of that earned by Starbucks. ²

Hundreds of thousands of enthusiasts yearly await the arrival of the PSL, which currently launches in early September before meteorological Summer ends. Naturally, thousands of contrarians have taken to social media to throw stones. The crasser of these have observed that in October no “basic bitch’s” ensemble is complete without a Starbucks cup in her hand. So successful it appears the drink has become, that it has become an unfortunate symbol for the vapidness of consumerism, or at least, mean-spiritedly, to white, middle-class, suburban women. ³
