One of the papal universities in Rome, operated by the Society of Jesus (the jesuits). The Pontificia Universitas Gregoriana, often known simply as "the Gregoriana", dates back to 1551, when Ignatius de Loyola founded the Collegium Romanum, which was made a full university in 1552. In 1585, the university was expanded by Pope Gregory XIII (hence the name).
