Oodnadatta is a small town in the
South Australian
desert, about 1000km north of
Adelaide. In 1872,
the
Overland Telegraph Line from
Adelaide to
Darwin passed through Oodnadatta. Oodnadatta was
proclaimed a
township in 1890. Soon after in 1891,
the railway line from
Warrina to Oodnadatta was opened.
Oodnadatta became an important
railhead, with mail
for
Alice Springs being carried there from Oodnadatta
by
camel train.
After
The Ghan railway line closed in 1980, Oodnadatta
has become much smaller.
