1913 E.M. Forster
novel which remained unpublished until 1971 because of its descriptions of homosexuality
. Maurice Hall (Forster would have pronounced it "morris") is born privileged, and this would be a typical novel about upperclass English
society in the late 19th century, if Maurice weren't attracted to other men. He attends public school
, where he falls in love with Clive, one of his schoolmates. Homosexuality is a criminal offense
in late 19th century and early 20th century England, so Maurice's feelings cause him a considerable level of angst.
Subject of a 1987 film, starring Hugh Grant as Clive and directed by James Ivory.
