Democratic Senator from Louisiana

Senator Landrieu was born Nov. 23, 1955. She is the eldest of nine children of former New Orleans Mayor Moon Landrieu and Verna Landrieu. She is married to Frank Snellings, and they have two adopted children, Connor and Mary Shannon.

She graduated from Louisiana State University in 1977 and went into a career in real estate. At the age of 23 she was elected to the Louisiana House of Representatives where she served for two terms. She then served eight years as State Treasurer. In 1997 she became the first woman from Louisiana elected to a full term in the United States Senate.

Senator Landrieu likes horseback riding and other outdoor activities like camping. Her favorite books from childhood were the Nancy Drew and Hardy Boys series and Little Women by Louisa May Alcott .
