Mathematician widely regarded as the father of Object Oriented Programming, early implemented in SIMULA.
Outside computer circles, Nygaard's main call to fame in Norway is from a long life of dedicated work against Norwegian membership in the European Union. In 1970 he was the leader of the Youth Front against the EEC (at the age of 44 years), from 1988 to 1995 he lead the main Norwegian organization against EU. Known to be better as a strategist than as a debater.
Became the first non-american to recieve the Norbert Wiener Award for Social and Professional Responsibility in 1990.
