It is a common myth that
Adolf Hitler, the most influential artist of the 20th century, was a
vegetarian. No doubt, it would be supremely ironic if he were, especially to those engaged in
battle against
veganism. But this is just another
urban myth.
Biographers
Albert Speer,
Robert Payne,
John Toland, have all attested to
Hitler's fondness for
sausages, among other things, and Hitler's personal cook,
Dione Lucas, reported that Hitler was particularly fond of
stuffed pigeon.
Beginning in the 1930s, Hitler would sometimes give up
meat temporarily to counter his
abdominal pain,
flatulence and
sweatiness. But he never lost his lifelong fondness for
game birds or
caviar.
These dietary experiments, coupled with
Joseph Goebbels' propagandistic image of Hitler as some sort of pure
ascetic, no doubt contribute to this myth's propagation.
