Graeme Base was born in England on April 6, 1958 and moved to Australia when he was eight (the same year he wrote his first book, Book of Monsters, illustrated in coloured pencil and never published). He graduated from the Swinburne College of Art in Melborne in 1978. He has illustrated several books, including My Grandma Lived in Gooligulch (1983), which he both wrote and illustrated, and The Days of the Dinosaurs (Jan Anderson, 1985).

He currently lives in Melborne with his wife, Robyn, and his children James, Katherine and William.
